Subject: Identifying Low VOC Paint Options
Reference:
D6-5000 Finish Codes

Purpose:
Environmental regulations in many areas require use of products with lower Volatile Organic Compound content. Some suppliers are not sure how to look up the qualified options in the Boeing specifications.

Manufacturing Information:

1. Find the BAC or BMS callout for your part.
  • Check the part drawing or plan.
  • If necessary, use D6-5000 to find the BAC or BMS number from the finish code
2. Find out what products are qualified
  • For BMS callout: Obtain the most recent revision of the specification including the Qualified Products List (QPL)
  • For BAC callout: Obtain the most recent revision of the specification and PSDs (Process Specification Departures) See materials control section (section 5)
3. Products with lower VOC levels are often designated by a special Type, Grade, or Class.
  • High Solids products are commonly designated Grade D.
  • Waterborne products are commonly designated Grade E.
4. Contact manufacturer for the "as mixed" VOC level, cost, and safety information.
5. Choose the product that meets your environmental regulations and manufacturing needs.
